Rules: LCP Program

The Live-In Caregiver Program helps to address the shortage of workers available for live-in care. It is jointly administered by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).

Since few native-born Canadians wish to work as live-in caregivers, the program offers Canadian families and individuals the opportunity to find quality live-in caregivers at affordable salaries.

At the same time it offers qualified foreign caregivers a chance to enter Canada for work with the added benefit of applying for Permanent Residence after having completed the legal requirements of work under the program (currently at 24 months).

5 Step Process:

To qualify the overseas worker: Ensure the overseas worker qualifies under the LCP ( see the eligibility requirement section under the caregiver menu)
To qualify the employer: This includes verification that the home meets the necessary bedroom requirements for a live-in caregiver, meets the financial requirement of being able to support and pay for the salary of the worker for the duration of the contract, as well as various other requirements
To apply in Canada for the Labour Market Impact Assessment ( LMIA) (formerly known as the Labour market opinion (LMO)). If in Quebec, this LMIA requires approval by Quebec immigration and a joint Federal-Quebec opinion will be given. Quebec is currently the only province in Canada that has an independent immigration department. AS immigration is ultimately the responsibility of the Canadian government, all provinces, except Quebec, leave the work of immigration to the federal government
To qualify the employer: This includes verification that the home meets the necessary bedroom requirements for a live-in caregiver, meets the financial requirement of being able to support and pay for the salary of the worker for the duration of the contract, as well as various other requirements
To apply at a foreign mission ( embassy or consulate ) for the workers travel visa and work permit
